    Sandy Creek Trail

    Length: 12 miles

    Approximate mileage from Allegheny College: 35 miles

    Type: Out and back

    Allowed Usage: Walking, Running, Bicycling, Mountain Biking, Cross Country Skiing

    Trail Surface: Asphalt

    The trail runs east to west, along East Sandy Creek and over Allegheny River via the Belmar Bridge. You can pick up the Samuel Justus Recreational Trail or the Allegheny River Trail where the Sandy Creek Trail intersects the Allegheny River, around the 5-mile marker of the Allegheny River Trail. A highlight of the trail is the Belmar Bridge made of a wooden deck and railings.

    The Samuel Justus Recreation Trail continues North from the Allegheny River Trail and connects Franklin to Oil City, PA. You’ll pass currently operating oil wells, iron furnaces, and a visitor’s center. This trail is a section of what will one day be the Erie to Pittsburgh Rails to Trails.     Running along the Allegheny River from Emlenton, PA to Franklin, PA this Rails-to-Trails offers something for every kind of recreationalist. A horse path runs adjacent to the trail. Continue North on the Samuel Justus Recreation Trail that’s parking lot serves as the parking area for both the North Trailhead for the Allegheny River Trail and for the Samuel Justus.
